I’m sharing a list of some free online tools that I hope will serve you. If you have suggestions for more tools to add to the list, by all means, let me know. You can never have too many free online tools in your arsenal.

Sometimes, the word “free” can give a negative connotation, but there are many free online tools out there that are worth using.

7 Zip: (free download) An open source, free alternative to WinZip. 7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. 7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions. You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don’t need to register or pay for 7-Zip. 7-Zip works in Windows 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000 / NT. There is a port of the command line version to Linux/Unix. On 7-Zip’s SourceForge Page you can find a forum, bug reports, and feature request systems.

Audacity: (free download) An open source software used for recording & editing audio files. Audacity® is free, open source, cross-platform audio software for multi-track recording and editing. Audacity is available for Windows®, Mac®, GNU/Linux® and other operating systems. Check our feature list, Wiki and Forum.

AVG: (free download) Anti-virus and anti-spyware protection. Fully loaded and refreshingly simple. Our free antivirus just got even better. It now includes real-time security updates, scans for both malware and performance issues, and even catches malicious downloads before they reach your PC. It’s also got an all-new, refreshingly simple design that shows you exactly how you’re protected. All of this, and it still won’t slow you down!

BrowserShots: (free online tool) Use this site to view how your website look in various browsers. Browsershots makes screenshots of your web design in different operating systems and browsers. It is a free open-source online web application providing developers a convenient way to test their website’s browser compatibility in one place. When you submit your web address, it will be added to the job queue. A number of distributed computers will open your website in their browser. Then they will make screenshots and upload them to our central dedicated server for your review.

CamStudio: (free download) Lets you record all screen & audio activity on your computer and create video files. CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

CCleaner: (free trial – used to be free to use) Removes unused files from your pc allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up space.

Color Cop: (free online tool) A multi-purpose color picker – great for web designers and programmers. Color Cop is a multi-purpose color picker for web designers and programmers. It identifies and represents colors in various hex color code formats. Simply drag the eyedropper control to any location on the screen and release. The hex color code for the selected color will be automatically copied to the clipboard.

Down For Everyone: (free online tool) Is your site down? Use this tool to see if your website is down for other people. Just insert the url in question and click to see what’s happening.

Evernote: (free download) Scan your notes, receipts, etc … it will OCR the content, sace it, and make it searchable. Make a note of it. Create a project to-do list. Jot down a reminder. Or snap a picture of a sketch. A note can be anything you want it to be. And once you make a note, it’s accessible wherever you go, forever.

FileZilla: (free download) Open source FTP program for uploading files to your host. FileZilla is open source software distributed free of charge under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Support is available through our forums, the wiki and the bug and feature request trackers. In addition, you will find documentation on how to compile FileZilla and nightly builds for multiple platforms in the development section.

Firefox: (free download) Alternate web browser. Mozilla Firefox is a free and open-source web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation and its subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation.

GIMP: (free download) An open source program used to create & edit – free alternative to Photoshop. GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OSX, Windows and more operating systems. It is free software, you can change its source code and distribute your changes. Whether you are a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist, GIMP provides you with sophisticated tools to get your job done. You can further enhance your productivity with GIMP thanks to many customization options and 3rd party plugins.

Kompozer: (free download) An easy to use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor. KompoZer is a complete web authoring system that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG web page editing. KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.

Marketing Forum: (free online tool) Very helpful forum with lots of good info on internet marketing. Friendly members too.

MorgueFiles: (search for images to use on your website or blog) Free images for creatives, by creatives. A post production file, over 350,000 free stock photos for commercial use.

MWSNAP: (free download) MWSnap is a small application that enables you to take snapshots from programs or any selected part of your screen. The program is free and very easy to use. It comes with hotkeys that will make it even easier to take a screenshot of any program, region and even of the entire screen.

Open Office: (free download) Open source office software – word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations … It also gives you the ability to convert your documents to PDF.

OSWD: (free downloads) Open Source Web Design is a platform for sharing standards-compliant free web design templates. We give web publishers a voice through good design.

PDF995, PDFEDIT995, SIGNATURE995: (free or paid download) Use this tool to easily convert files to PDF format. PDF995 makes it easy and affordable to create professional-quality documents in the popular PDF file format.

PDF to Word Converter: (free online tool) Easily create editable Word Doc files from PDF content – for legit purposes only! 🙂 As far as I can see, in order to use this tool for free, you have to fill in the blanks on the left hand side of the site window and have the converted document sent to your email account.

pixabay: (search for images to use on your website or blog) Free images and videos you can use anywhere. All images and videos on Pixabay are released free of copyrights under Creative Commons CC0. You may download, modify, distribute, and use them royalty free for anything you like, even in commercial applications. Attribution is not required

Pixie: (free download) Great for web designers – just point to a color and discover the code value for that color. Pixie is a utility made especially for webmasters and designers. It is a color picker with a few extra goodies. Run it, simply point to a color, and it will tell you the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK and HSV values of that color. You can then use these values to reproduce the selected color in your favorite programs. Pixie will also show the current coordinates of your mouse pointer.

Skype: (free download) Make free calls over the internet to other people on Skype.

Textpad: (free download – free trial, then paid) A powerful text editor. Whether you simply need a powerful replacement for Notepad, a tool for editing your web pages, or a programming IDE, TextPad does what you want, the way you would expect.

VLC Media Player: (free download) Media player capable of reading most audio and video formats. VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

Not all free online tools are created equally, so some will serve you, and some won’t.  When you’re starting out and maybe not too sure about where you’re going to take your blog, it can be costly (especially if you’re on a budget). If you need to get a domain name, pay for hosting, decide to pay for a theme rather than using a free one, it starts to add up. So… some free online tools, to give a helping hand, can go a long way for the moment.
