Niche MarketingNiche Marketing – If you’ve been around online for any length of time, you’ve heard the word “Niche” and likely also the term “Niche Marketing”. You may be wondering just what a niche is…. Not to fear, it’s not complicated. A niche is, simply put, a specific target area – a distinct segment of a market. I get more into the definition farther along in the post.

Niche Marketing or Strategic Marketing is the process of selecting a niche and marketing to those that have an interest in that niche.

Now, it sounds simple – in theory – but it takes a bit of time and effort to find a niche that might be profitable. In this post, I’ll attempt to help you become a Niche Finder

What is a Niche Market?

So, just what is a Niche Market? A niche market is a group of people with a common interest, ability or nature, who would all be interested in a common product or service. The common interest of these people can be anything ranging from hobbies, problems, cultural backgrounds or any desire they might have.

Here are a few examples of niche markets:

  1. People who are interested in, or are currently into, scrapbooking
  2. People who have a common problem such as lower back pain
  3. People who are all Hispanic
  4. People who have the common desire to learn carpentry
  5. People who want to learn a second language

People with common interests tend to ‘hang out’ and you can easily find groups of them in forums, groups or visiting sites or blogs in their area of interest.

So, in your niche market research, you have to make sure there is a real market for your products or services. You have to identify what your market wants & needs to know and will eventually be willing to pay to get it. If you try to sell yarn for knitting to a plumber, it’s of no benefit to you and a waste of your time and money.

You have to know WHO will buy your products:

What they want and need
How and where to market to them
What marketing methods will work
How much they’re willing to pay for certain products

You can find out WHAT your market wants and needs by using keyword search engines or tools. A keyword is the term being entered in the search engines to help your potential customers find the sites they want to find. A Google search for keyword tools will point you toward quite a few. If you go to Google and just enter “Free Google Keyword Tool” and have a Google account, you can sign in and get great results!

Very informative post. I think Niche marketing is very important in order to be successful in any business. It requires a lot of research though. But knowing exactly what customers want and filling that gap is what makes the difference.
